What exactly is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is the name give to areas of chronic swelling in the body.  It occurs when an accumulation of protein-rich fluid, known as lymph collects in the tissues causing localised areas of swelling.  It is usually caused by damage or trauma to the lymphatic system which disrupts the body's ability to filter the lymph fluid back into the circulatory system.  Lymphoedema can be classed as either secondary or primary.

Secondary lymphoedema is commonly caused by surgery directly affecting the lymph nodes, such as in breast, head and neck or gynaecological cancers, radiation, infection or trauma.  It most commonly affects the arms, legs or the face and neck, but can also affect the chest, back, groin or abdominal areas.

Primary lymphoedema is relatively rare and is caused by genetic issues which affect the lymphatic system, causing areas of chronic swelling, most commonly in the limbs.

Early intervention is key in the successful treatment of lymphoedema and it is important to know the signs and begin immediate treatment with a Certified Lymphoedema Therapist should they arise.

If you have recently had surgery or are due to undertake surgery which will involve lymph node removal, chat to your surgeon who will usually ensure that you attend a lymphoedema clinic at the hospital so that baseline measurements of the limbs can be taken.  These measurements can then be compared should you feel any changes.

Signs to look out for include:

  • Numbness, tingling or change of sensation in the affected area

  • Tightness or heaviness

  • Jewellery or clothing leaving marks or feeling tighter

  • Reduced range of motion in the affected limb

  • Difficulty swallowing (head and neck)

  • Changes in voice especially in the morning (head and neck)

  • Swelling in the back of the hand (arm)

  • Hardening or thickening of the skin

  • Aching/discomfort

  • Recurring infections
