Did you know that manual lymphatic drainage can help with relieving the symptoms associated with sinus congestion?  We offer a specially designed treatment incorporating lymphatic drainage and acupressure to help ease the suffering caused by chronic sinus symptoms.

Chronic sinusitis is one of the most common chronic illness. In America alone there are an estimated 35 million people affected, it can be a debilitating condition for sufferers who have most likely tried a range of over the counter and prescription drugs for relieving their discomfort. However, many don’t realize that lymphatic drainage could potentially be their greatest ally in the continuous battle against sinusitis.

What is Sinusitis?

Simply put, sinusitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the sinuses. In an acute stage, lymphatic drainage would not be recommended, but for a chronic sufferer, it can bring great relief. What’s the difference between acute and chronic?

  • Acute sinusitis – is categorised as an infection that lasts for up to 3 weeks. In most cases it’s caused by a bacterial infection, resulting from a secondary complication from a viral respiratory infection such as the common cold, or even untreated allergies.

  • Chronic sinusitis – is an infection that lasts for more than 3 weeks, this too may be caused by a bacterial infection, but more often than not, is a chronic inflammatory disorder similar to bronchial asthma. Chronic sinusitis can last for months or years if inadequately treated. Allergies, structural problems, smoking or even overuse of decongestant nasal sprays can be a contributory cause.

What are the symptoms:

The symptoms can be much more severe in an acute infection and would need to be treated by a doctor.  Listed below are the symptoms for chronic sinusitis. If in any doubt, always check with your doctor first:

  • A runny nose. The discharge may be green or yellow.

  • A reduced sense of smell.

  • Pain over the affected sinus.  However, pain is often not a main feature of chronic sinusitis (unlike acute sinusitis). In many cases, it is more of a feeling of facial fullness or mild discomfort rather than pain.

  • Headache

  • Bad breath

  • Toothache

  • Cough

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ears

  • Tiredness

How lymph drainage can help:

Stimulating certain points on the face and scalp along with specific lymphatic drainage techniques to the face and neck can open the blocked nasal sinuses alleviating some of the irritation and helping to relieve the pressure by draining mucus-filled sinuses. It’s also v-e-r-y relaxing, spending an hour having your face neck and scalp worked on sends most people to sleep.

What else can I do?

Steaming is said to be very helpful as a natural treatment, placing the head over a bowl of hot water for around 20 mins can really help loosen the mucus and open up the airways.
